The city-states of Ferrara and Mantua stood at the heart of fifteenth-century musical, intellectual, and cultural life. Under the patronage of the Este and Gonzaga dynasties, these courts drew some of Europe’s most celebrated composers. This programme explores how their wealth, ambition, and openness to new ideas fostered extraordinary creativity. In these vibrant centres, composers such as Josquin des Prez, Johannes Martini, Adrian Willaert, Cipriano de Rore, Jacques de Wert, and Claudio Monteverdi shaped and transformed the motet and madrigal.
