A week of choral workshops in St Saviour’s Church in the beautiful Cornish village of Polruan on the South Coast, culminating in a concert at the nearby St Wyllow’s Church, Lanteglos. The concert will include the world premiere of Peter Skellern's moving setting of the Beatitudes in Cornish, and is given in aid of the restoration of St Ildierna's - a medieval church in the village of Lansallos, which was sadly damaged by an arson attack that destroyed the roof and organ.

According to legend, when Bach was 20 he walked more than 200 miles to meet Buxtehude, the most influential composer of his time.
Dating from 1680, Dietrich Buxtehude's Membra Jesu Nostri is a cycle of seven cantatas that successively contemplate different parts of the crucified Christ's body, starting with his pierced feet and ending with his face, bloodstained from the crown of thorns. Each corporal allusion in the text becomes the starting point for a meditation on a different aspect of Christian revelation, while the music glides from harmonic suspensions suggestive of great suffering to passages of timeless simplicity. Parts of it, notably the sections on Christ's knees and heart, also tip towards a Song-of-Songs-like sensuality.
This fabulous work will be preceded and followed by two motets, also by Buxtehude

Gesualdo's most celebrated work: a setting of the Tenebrae Responsories published in 1611. The Tenebrae Responsories is an office of matins and lauds sung on the last three days of Holy Week involving the ceremonial lighting and extinguishing candles. Gesualdo's remarkable setting responds to the text very much in the style of madrigals, using sharp dissonance and shocking chromatic juxtapositions to evoke the emotional content of the text dealing with the suffering of Christ.
The programme will be interspersed with plainchant antiphons, verses and lessons performed by Andrew Griffiths, tenor.

Too often blurred with the bright colours of the Elizabethan era that preceded it, the Jacobean Age displayed a different, and no less striking, musical mien. Religious consolidation, the slow-dawning secularism of thought and society, and a pervasive strain of melancholy left its mark on music that is serious, complex and rich, delighting in subtle variety of mood and intricacy of workmanship. Our concert celebrates the two greatest musical lights of this fascinating time, Thomas Tomkins and Orlando Gibbons, through their madrigals, keyboard works and church music.

Orlando Chamber Choir battles it out with a famous French song of battle, and wins with a Spanish Mass for Victory.
In the famous chanson La guerre by Clément Janequin the choir imitates hectic sounds of battle including trumpet calls, cannon fire and cries of victory. The chanson inspired Spain's foremost Renaissance composer Tomás Luis de Victoria to write his extravagant nine-part Missa pro Victoria - said to have been a favourite of the Spanish King Philip III, so our concert comes with royal recommendation. The programme also includes choral works by Juan Cererols and organ works by Antonio de Cabezón and Sebastian Aguilera de Heredia.

A visit to XVIth century Venice with Orlando Chamber Choir and soloists performing Renaissance works written for St Mark's Cathedral.
Adrian Willaert, a Flemish composer appointed maestro di cappella at the basilica, was inspired by its two choir lofts to write antiphonal compositions for double choir - from which evolved composition techniques known as the Venetian Polychoral Style. Andrea Gabrieli was one of Willaert's pupils and organist at St Mark's. Giovanni Gabrieli succeeded his teacher uncle - and eventually surpassed him in fame, spreading the Venetian Style through Europe.
A grand musical gondola ride with director James Weeks on the stern.
